Cloud Services

Cloud Services, as defined by NIST Special Publication 800-145, are available to Texas customers as a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.

The NIST definition lists five essential characteristics of cloud computing:

  1. On-demand self-service
  2. Broad network access
  3. Resource pooling
  4. Rapid elasticity or expansion
  5. Measured service

It also lists three "service models" (software, platform and infrastructure), and four "deployment models" (private, community, public and hybrid) that together categorize ways to deliver cloud services.

DIR is here to help your agency achieve cloud maturity - learn more about cloud offerings, including Public, On Premise Private, or Hybrid Cloud Services provided under the Data Center Services (DCS) program.

Private (Atos) = Infrastructure is provisioned for exclusive use by a single organization comprising multiple consumers

Public (Rackspace) = Public Cloud Servers, while secure, may include other customers, such as the general public, using that cloud service. This infrastructure exists on the premises of the cloud provider.

DIR also has 'Do it Yourself' contracts under the Cooperative Contracts program providing Cloud Services. These contracts provide DIR customers with access to cloud service models and deployment models that also meets the essential characteristics of cloud computing.
